6 Keys to Effective Church Communication
Mark Batterson reports on six keys to effective church communication from the National New Church Conference:
1. “Less is more”
2. “Violate expectations”
3. “Picture is worth ten million words”
4. “Say old things in new ways”
5. “You are the message”
6. “Stronger emotion equals longer memory”
5 Questions on the Emerging Church with Dr. Mark DeVine
Ariel had the excellent thought of doing a short Q&A with Midwestern Seminary theology prof Dr. Mark DeVine, who happens to be one of my dearest friends from my blessed days at MBTS.
Here are the five questions on the emering church.
If you want a balanced, conversative opinion on the emerging church “discussion” or conversation … please take the time to read through the good Doc’s Theology Prof blog.
I’ve told Dr. DeVine this in person and also by email and I want to say it publicly now … he’s making invaluable contribution to this hot, or better yet, FIERY topic.
I would never seek to speak for him … but I think what he’s attempting to do in this whole debate is to contribute a well-informed, thoughtful and discerning, balanced and reasonable look at the emerging church.
If, and I hope you are, having conversations about this topic in your church … I’d like to give one thought to take into those discussions about the emerging church: One size doesn’t fit all.
In other words, don’t lump all so-called “emerging types” together. Putting them all into one simple box is a disservice to those who love Jesus and want to make a difference in the world.
So before you do … go get a primar on this topic from a solid, Bible-believing, Jesus-loving, Ph.D., former missionary, Southern boy … who has a side-spllitting sense of humor …
Dr. Mark Devine, my friend, I am praying for you! Thank you for helping us wade through this discussion with grace and truth.
Threads: Interactive Young Adults Bible Studies by LifeWay
Bill Seaver sent me the Threads Leader Kit for LifeWay’s Young Adult imprint.
I’m going to be teaching it Sunday …
Just looking through the materials it seems like LifeWay is moving in the right direction in regards to staying relevant to this generation and also to churches and ministries seeking to reach them by offering quality materials like Threads.
UPDATE: So I taught the Threads material last Sunday … I really enjoyed using it and got some good response to the “Waiting on God” theme. Not exactly sure how or if I’d use the video clips, but the lesson notes and questions rocked.
Duct Tape Marketing
I thought I would pass along a great book to read called Duct Tape Marketing by John Jantsch. If you haven’t heard about it or read it - I do recommend it! The subtitle is “The World’s Most Practical Small Business Marketing Guide” and it really is practical and can be applied to any church regardless of size. Many of the topics aren’t new ideas but the way that it is written is simple and avoids the useless hyperbole most marketing books throw at you. Grab a copy today!

Freelance CSS Coder, WordPress Programmer Wanted
UPDATE: We’re still interested in hearing from you coders and designers …. one key ingredient we’re needing is time and flexibility! Thanks!
As Nathan and I start to heat up releasing new free WordPress themes and custom WordPress designs, we’re now looking for some help in CSS design and Wordpress coding as we continue to grow this “side” business of ours.
If you’re a pretty good CSS coder and familiar with WordPress, let me know. We’re hoping to find partners who can collaborate on blog and website design projects. And of course, as believers, we’d really love to work and partner with other Christ-followers (although that’s not necessarily a prerequisite).
