Another Job Description for a Church Communications Director

LifeChurch just posted a job description for the position of Executive Communications Coordinator for the Central Offices.

I’ve wrote about the Job Description of a Church Communications Director before, even giving a Photo Job Description …. but it’s neat to see how one of the most innovative churches in America frames it too.

I get emails every now and then from budding or potential church communications people asking about my work and for advice. And I can honestly say that their description summarizes most church’s and/or pastor’s expectations of that position.

One thing I hope to write about soon here is an idea planted in my head by Terrell Sanders, the founder of MinistryCOM, about how there are three types of church comm’rs. The two that stuck out to me were: Technician and Strategist. (The third as I recall is a blended one of both Technician and Strategist.)

This position at Life sounds more like a Strategist position to me.

Here’s one section of the description …

You will be:

  • Responsible for many different types of internal and external communication
  • Encouraged to redefine the scope and current format of existing communications
  • Conducting research on a variety of topics
  • Expected to contribute in brainstorming and idea generation
  • The primary contact for regular communication with other church leaders
  • Creating a new role that hasn’t been done before.

The description also mentions the person for this position will need to be a “gifted writer,” “have a personal blog,” “think about creating videos,” “have ministry ideas you’re waiting to implement,” “often think, ‘This is pretty good, but I can make it even better,’” and also “This idea might work great in church.”

As you can read, this is a new position for LifeChurch.
