How We Use Our Church Mission Statement For Our Year-Long Theme
Each year, our pastor has been walking our church through individual focus areas of our mission statement. The individual areas become our church-wide, year-long theme.
This year is “The Year of the Disciple: Head, Heart, Hands.”
Here’s our mission statement, bolded with our current year’s emphasis:
Look what God is doing!
He binds us together in fellowship
He brings us together for worship
He builds us up for service
He sends us out with the Good News of Jesus.
I’ve been especially challenged by the theme and focus on discipleship and service.
I read a quote in Dave Ferguson’s Big Idea that really convicted me … paraphrasing it, he quoted another Christian leader who said that the average Christian is educated three times above his/her level of obedience.
Wow … how true.
… especially in my own life.
I’ve been to seminary (33 hours so far), heard nearly two years of seminary chapel sermons with some of the finest expositors, and sit under one of the finest communicators I’ve ever heard explain and apply the Bible each week …
But I admit … in my case, I’m educated WAY above my level of obedience.
So, needless to say I’m excited about this year’s theme in my own life.
Here are some of the images and pieces we’re using to promote the focus:
Theme logo — Used on banners, PowerPoint screens, web, print, etc. (See above)
Bulletin — This bulletin is from last Sunday’s service, so you could also see our bulletin.
Newsletter article (PDF) – In our weekly newsletter we explained the entire theme idea to the congregation (in print).
Sermon series — Here’s the kick-off theme sermon … plus our sermon download page for the rest.

If you do something similar to this, I’d love to hear from you and post samples from your church’s theme, including bulletin samples, etc. Just send me an email.
