All The Things I Love About Ella - Not the Jazz Vocalist But WordPress 2.1
As you know, I recently upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.1 nicknamed “Ella.” A couple readers asked what I liked about it (her).
Most of this will be found in the list of improvements at WordPress, but I’ll go ahead and repeat them. :-)
My favorites … so far … and listed according to personal value attached to them:
1. WP says they’ve tweaked the database code to be more efficient. Maybe it’s me but I “feel” like it’s faster. Who knows. But just the promise alone is … well … promising. :-)
2. The static home page option … no more plugins or hacking the code. Just click the “Options” tab then the “Reading” tab and select a page to be your front page. I love that! It’ll make using WordPress as a content management system so much easier.
3. When you’re writing a post, you can switch between the WYSIWIG or Code option … I love this. Although I use the code version by default, it’s nice to have this. I think this may help when trying to embed YouTube videos and other stuff … just switch back and forth and put your code in.
4. Uploading photos is a lot easier. I hated the old system of uploading photos. It was clunky and a pain. Sometimes I’d just upload in Dreamweaver and link. Now it seems a lot easier and the options are in plain sight without having to click on the image.
Here are some features I think are cool, but not necessarily a reason to upgrade …
OK, that’s it so far … go read all the features at WP.

The autosave is a Godsend! I was writing a post a while back, and when I went to save it (for whatever reason, WP would erase the text in the post input box, never to be retreived), and my connection went out (on a laptop)! Needless to say, I had to write it all over again. Not cool.
Love the view tabs for code/visual.
Haven’t really noticed any speed improvements with the DB, don’t use the photo uploads, and the static home page I would never use, but can see the value in having the option.
That new login page is really nice. I saw it on the wordpress.com pages and was oh-so jealous. Glad they put it in 2.1.

I’m anxious to upgrade to 2.1 but I, uhhhh, hacked the code in my 2.02 version and need to figure out what I all did first. I know, I should have documented it but I kept putting it off.
What I’d really like is a pre-upgrade script to tell me what files will change once I do the actual upgrade.
I’m all for some Ella (the jazz one) talk too!
