A Digital Sermon Recording Kit for Sermon Podcasting
It seems like there’s been a lot of interest in my post Sermon Podcasting Made Easy, so I thought I’d also give some suggestions for a Digital Sermon Audio Recording Kit.
Basically, here’s how I’ve recorded some of my sermons when the church did not have the resources to record my sermons digitally.
I use the following items:
- Olympus Digital Recorder – I prefer Olympus because I’ve used two of them with great ease. I picked three different types I thought would be adequate for sermons lasting at least 45 minutes. I spent less than $100 on mine. Focus on the storage capacity in terms of MBs and GBs instead of what the packaging lists as recording time. Sometimes the packaging is very misleading. You want to be able to record in high quality for a time more than your typical sermon time. Low quality is just that … low quality.
- Lapel Microphone – You could also find these at Radio Shack for about $25. Most usually requires a camera-sized battery. You’ll want to get extras of those just to be sure you have them available.
- Rechargeable Batteries – Invest in a good four-pack of rechargeable AA batteries. They can be used for all sorts of things. But good, fresh batteries are a must.
Here’s how I actually record it …
Just like a regular microphone, I loop it through my shirt, putting the recorder in my pocket. Then right before I get up to preach, maybe during the introduction or a prayer, I hit record. I usually don’t turn it off until I’m walking off the platform during the invitation. It’s OK to overlap recorder. You can easily edit out things … what you can’t do it add in things.
P.S. — If you found this post helpful and plan to buy one of these items, please consider buying these items through my Amazon aStore. It helps support my work here. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. I found your site from Micah. My Music Minister is going to buy a recorder today.
