5 Blogging Questions with Wade Burleson
As part of the "Blogging 101 for Pastors" series [click here to see all the posts], I've been asking several proflic blogging pastors to answer five basic questions about blogging. Our next blogger is Wade Burleson, a Southern Baptist pastor in Oklahoma, who blogs at Grace and Truth To You. I had the opportunity to interview Wade in the spring 2006 for the Southern Baptist Texan newsmagazine. He took a couple of moments from his busy schedule to respond to my 5 Blogging Questions ... here goes:
1. Why (or how) did you start blogging?
I began blogging because I was in a position where I needed for people to be able to read my perspective on events at the International Mission Board. It began, if you will, as a ‘minority report’ over the passage of the new guidelines for missionary candidates. What is strange to me is that every important deliberative body including the Supreme Court, Congress, British Parliament, etc . . . issues minority reports. I am grateful for my blog because everything I have written [is] on the internet and people can see that I have always been respectful of my fellow trustees, never once violated any confidentiality of the board, and simply voiced my principled opposition to guidelines that I believed exceeded the BFM 2000, not to mention the Scriptures.
2. What subject do you post most about?
I am currently posting Bible studies, interesting quotes of our Baptist forefathers, and other material that I believe keeps our attention on the sufficiency of the Word of God for Southern Baptist beliefs and practice. I will sometimes post items regarding my church and family, but those are rare.
3. What are your favorite blog tools?
I honestly do not know much about the technical aspects of blogging. I do have a stat counter to show the countries from which people read my blog, but other than that, it is a standard free blog available to anyone who registers on blogspot.
4. How often do you post?
It varies, but probably averages once every couple of days --- in some weeks, depending on what I am writing, every day.
5. What one piece of advice would you give for prospective blogging pastors?
Be nice, and have thick skin. No matter how gracious you are there will be people who will call you everything under that sun --- and more. Also, don’t take yourself too seriously. If you can’t laugh at yourself every once in a while then it’s time to quit.
[[ THANKS, WADE, FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DO THIS! ]]
