5 Blogging Questions with Steve McCoy of Reformissionary

As part of the "Blogging 101 for Pastors" series [click here to see all the posts], I've been asking several proflic blogging pastors to answer five basic questions about blogging.

Pastor Steve McCoy of Reformissionary is our next 5 Blogging Questions responder.
I've followed Steve's blog for a long time now. As you'll learn below, his main topic is everything "missional." Through his blog, he's introduced me to the work of some key people who are championing the missional lifestyle.

Here are his answers:

1. Why (or how) did you start blogging?

I think I just wanted a place to talk about stuff that I was reading and finding interesting. I liked the idea of a broader community of Christians who could connect. I don't think I had some big goal. It was fun, the world of blogging was growing, and it was worth a shot. So I grabbed a free Blogger blog, then transitioned to another, then moved to Typepad where I currently have my blog.

2. What subject do you post most about?

The object of my man-crush: Tim Keller. And/or anything missional.

3. What are your favorite blog tools?

I like Typepad, though they've been a little frustrating in the last year. Getting back to normal. I use Bloglines for feeds, StatCounter for stats. Technorati is great for finding out who else is blogging on topics I'm interested in. It's also helpful to see who is mentioning me on their blog. One of the best sources of finding stuff I care to blog about is Google Alerts. I set up a "missional" alert and whenever something pops up on the radar they email me. Rock on.

4. How often do you post?

As often as I feel compelled. Vague, I know. I used to post because I felt the need to keep the blog going. I thought that I had to post daily in order to keep readers. Blogs can trap you in that mentality. Now I post because the info needs to get out there. I feel like it's a service to readers. It probably averages out to once a day, but many of my posts are pointing to other good resources out there (articles, books, audio, etc).

5. What one piece of advice would you give for prospective blogging pastors?

I guess it would be to know why you are blogging and making sure that it matches up with what your calling is in ministry, or you shouldn't do it. And then kill your blog when you don't know why it exists anymore or when it has outlived its purpose.
