5 Blogging Questions with Perry Noble

As part of the "Blogging 101 for Pastors" series [click here to see all the posts], I've been asking several proflic blogging pastors to answer five basic questions about blogging.

Perry Noble, s
enior Pastor of NewSpring Church, located in Anderson, S.C., blogs at Perry Noble.com. Look around on the Internet much and you'll see links to him galore. Here's his answers to my 5 Blogging Questions:

1. Why (or how) did you start blogging?

To be honest…I didn’t want to “blog.” It sounded like some sort of disease. People would ask me, “Hey man, have you seen my blog?” and I would reply, “no, you freak -- go see a doctor!”

But then, after our tech peeps here at NewSpring Church explained to me what a blog was I became very interested. I watched what they would do on their sites and began to think of ways that the blog could be used.

Finally Ken Wilson, who had been pestering me for months, convinced me to begin blogging. I said I would give it a shot for six months and see how I liked it. And so here we are a year and a half later -- still going.

2. What subject do you post most about?

The church! I love the local church—LOVE IT! And so I use my blog to cast vision for those here at NewSpring Church and to challenge, encourage and inspire other church leaders.

3. What are you favorite blog tools?

OK -- this is where I am NO GOOD in this interview thing. You see, I am a technical idiot. I have been told about bloglines and feedburner and all of these other things … and still I have no idea what they are. SO … my favorite blog tools are whatever your favorite blog tools are!

4. How often do you post?

Usually once a day, Monday through Friday … and I give it a rest on the weekend.

5. What one piece of advice would you give for prospective blogging pastors?

Actually—two things…

The first is that ANYTHING you post WILL get quoted back to you. It is so amazing … half of the time I only know what I said because people tell me what I said. THE problem is that by the time what I wrote makes it back to me … it’s not what I said at all. You will be misunderstood!

The second is that you will be criticized … so unless you want to get into a tee-tee contest with some dude who has no job and sits in front of his computer in his boxers in his mom’s basement and tries to criticize everything you say … I would not do the comments thing -- OR if you do I would make sure that they are filtered somewhat. It’s not that I mind people who disagree with me … it's just that people who are critical for the sake of being critical seem to have a way of finding your blog … so you had better know how to deal with that.
