5 Blogging Questions with Micah Fries of Friesville
Micah Fries of Friesville has graciously taken time to answer my 5 Blogging Questions ... I met Micah while attending and working for Midwestern Baptist Seminary in Kansas City. He's a great guy, with a great big missionary heart ... and he's like 19-feet tall and has a radio voice! :-)
Micah pastors Missouri Valley Baptist Church and is using technology in an awesome way there -- his church's site is a WordPress blog.
Here goes:
1. Why (or how) did you start blogging?
This question should be answered in two parts. I started blogging a little more than 2 years ago. I began blogging as an attempt to connect with old friends. We dialogued about things that were pertinent to our friendships and I had a total of 5-10 readers. The second phase of my blogging experience began about a year ago, however, when I began blogging about SBC issues. There were a series of issues that arose in SBC life that I felt compelled to comment on. Since then my blog I have gained a tremendous amount of new readers and as such have chosen to blog about more serious issues than I used to deal with. I occasionally do something funny, or unimportant, but I generally try to deal with topics that will address a larger audience.
2. What subject do you post most about?
I post mostly about personal spiritual questions and denominational issues.
3. What are your favorite blog tools?
I have a few that I really enjoy using. First is WordPress. I just recently converted from Blogger to WordPress and I now host my blog on my own site. This conversion has made blogging much more flexible, in my opinion, and allows me the opportunity to do more than I could do with a free Blogger account.
Secondly, I love using an RSS reader. There are a series of readers that are integrated right into your Mozilla FireFox browser. (Which, by the way, is the best browser available. I highly recommend never using Internet Explorer.)
Additionally, I use sitemeter.com and statcounter.com to track my traffic on my blog.
4. How often do you post?
This is based on material, but I generally try to average at least once a day during the week and at least once over the weekend. Some days it is more, so less, but that’s my aim.
5. What one piece of advice would you give for prospective blogging pastors?
The one piece of advice I would have is to be careful with your posts. In other words, don’t just write and post without allowing for some time to really consider what you’re doing. I have often said things that I regretted later and wished that I had exercised caution and patience in my blogging. Remember that Google can find anything!
[[ THANKS, MICAH. GOD BLESS YOU IN YOUR MINISTRY AND STUDY AT MIDWESTERN! ]]
