5 Blogging Questions with Internet Monk's Michael Spencer
As part of the "Blogging 101 for Pastors" series [click here to see all the posts], I've been asking several proflic blogging pastors or believers to answer five basic questions about blogging. The fourth blogging minister that has responded to my 5 Questions emails was InternetMonk's Michael Spencer. According to his site bio, he's "been a minister, youth specialist, writer, teacher and communicator in churches and schools for over 30 years."
I first heard about Michael's site while helping Dr. Mark DeVine with TheologyProf.com, then I saw him quoted in a recent Time Magazine article.
1. Why (or how) did you start blogging?
I'm a writer, and blogging allows me to write, be published and be read by an audience. It was that simple. I started blogging political stuff in 2000 when I started Internet Monk.
2. What subject do you post most about?
Today I write mostly a critiques of the current evangelical scene, as well as general Christian blogging that reflects the preaching I do in my ministry.
3. What are your favorite blog tools?
4. How often do you post?
At Internet Monk, about every other day. At the Boars Head Tavern, maybe 5-10 times a day.
5. What one piece of advice would you give for prospective blogging pastors?
If you can't write well, don't do it. If you do it, keep doing it for a long time so you will have an audience. Learn from good bloggers. Don't be mean, but be distinctive and provocative. Be unique. Don't be a high five fanboy blog for other blogs. Post different kinds of things. Update frequently or don't bother.
