5 Blogging Questions with Drew Goodmanson

As part of the "Blogging 101 for Pastors" series [click here to see all the posts], I've been asking several proflic blogging pastors to answer five basic questions about blogging.

Drew Goodman, who is a pastor/elder at Kaleo Church in San Diego, blogs Goodmanson.com. He also "leads a web development company called Monk Development," which has produced Ekklesia 360 and Sermon Cloud.

1. Why (or how) did you start blogging?

I started blogging when I was hired to write a weekly column, Sheep & Goats, on spirituality for the San Diego Reader. I also began to blog about a church I co-planted in San Diego and technology. It was when I realized I could easily connect to people who has similar passions that I became hooked on blogging. Today, writing a blog provides valuable feedback loops on these topics, because we are able to see a variety of perspectives. This phenomenon is extremely valuable, I recently wrote a post about it: Why God is more glorified by Web 2.0.

2. What subject do you post most about?

There are three things that I blog most about. These three topics are the areas I want to dedicate my life-work to. The first is discussing the shape of the church to come and my direct involvement in a church planting movement as co-founder, elder/pastor at Kaleo Church in San Diego.

Second, I want to help the church use technology to further the spread of the Gospel. This involves primarily helping guide the church to effectively create church websites, engage in online outreach and send people on mission online. I do a lot of this thinking at Monk Development, a company that develops web applications. We've developed several web applications for churches, such as Ekklesia 360 and Sermon Cloud. We are currently building web 2.0 sites for many ministries, churches, the worship community and church networks/denominations.

Lastly, I want to help develop Gospel-centered leaders in both my roles in church and through my company. I tend to blog about specific applications of the gospel to ministry and/or leadership development.

3. What are your favorite blog tools?

Wordpress, Feedburner, Bloglines, Technorati & StatsCounter

4 How often do you post?

I try to post at least a couple times a week. There are seasons where I post daily, but typically it's every other day.

5. What one piece of advice would you give for prospective blogging pastors?

If you are trying to develop a following, try to determine a focus on what you will blog about. Your voice will be lost in the forest if your topics are all over the place.
