5 Blogging Questions with Mark Wilson of Revitalize Your Church

Mark O. Wilson is senior pastor of Hayward Wesleyan Church in Wisconsin. He blogs at Revitalize Your Church.

Here’s his answers:

1.Why (How) did you start blogging?

I wanted to encourage pastors in small communities. Every week I get a few calls or e-mails from pastors in small places who are looking for some help. I thought the blog might be a way to bless them.

2. What subject do you blog most about?

The day to day stuff pastors have to deal with, and my own personal experiences. I throw in a lot of random stuff too — great links, quotes, insights from other leaders. Sometimes, I’ll write a poem, talk about my family, or just rant. I try to make people smile, mostly.

3. What are your favorite blog tools?

I’m not a very advanced “techy” — so, I use Blogger, and have a SiteMeter. It’s fun to see who links to me via Technorati.

4. How often do you post?

Every day almost. I often write three or four posts at a time and then post them throughout the week.

6. What one piece of advice would you give for prospective blogging pastors?

Keep it short, simple and interesting. Posting often brings people back. I have a lot of regulars now.

Be prepared for nasty people who misunderstand you. It doesn’t pay to fight — and trying to explain yourself to a negative, dysfunctional commenters only makes matters worse.

Don’t use the blog to gossip about people (or institutions) or to air the dirty laundry in your church. Keep it focused on honoring Jesus, and blessing others.
