Dr. Hershael York is preaching professor at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and blogs at Confessions of a Pastor as well as team blogging at Him We Proclaim. Here’s his answers:

1. Why (or how) did you start blogging?

I actually started blogging without ever telling a soul about it. I did it originally to journal. I did not do it faithfully, but fitfully. Only several months after my first blogs did anyone ever find it and comment on it. I didn’t originally do it for anyone else’s eyes, but I just love to write. It was merely a new technology for journaling.

2. What subject do you post most about?

I can’t see a single theme that dominates other than the implications of the Lordship of Christ in one’s life. I also find a few humorous videos that I embed for comic relief.

3. What are your favorite blog tools?

Embedded videos from Google videos or YouTube.

4. How often do you post?

Sporadically. I try not to confuse writing about ministry with actual ministry. Blogging is a leisurely pasttime, not a necessity. Family, ministry, and some appropriate downtime are much higher on my list of priorities than blogging.

5. What one piece of advice would you give for prospective blogging pastors?

Check your motive. If blogging feeds your ego, it will only grow larger after you feed it. Beware the tendency to write things online that you would never say in the pulpit or to someone’s face. Blogging can seduce you into a false bravado that will not serve you well and might get you in trouble. Make sure that you edify and don’t merely pontificate.
